Planechase: Pictures of the Deck Pack & Information

September 2, 2009 · 3 Comments

Planechase Logo

Planechase releases on Sept. 4th!  According to the back of the box it is a:

groundbreaking new way to experience planeswalking. Through this innovative new kind of card, two or more players can battle each other across a variety of diverse worlds, each with its own unique effect on the game. These thrilling new conditions add a whole new layer of chaos, meaning the only thing you can count on is unpredictability.

Basically, your all-new Planes cards have special abilities that modify the game & each of the 4 deck packs come with 10 different planes cards. If you play with multiple people with multiple Planechase decks the game will be extra wild.

If you’ve played MTGO anytime recently many of the newly created casual games are in the Planeswalker format.

Planechase is partitioned into 4 theme decks; Elemental Thunder, Metallic Dreams, Strike Force & Zombie Empire.  I personally like Zombie Empire the best but that is solely because I’m a fan of black.

Each plane deck pack comes with the following:

  • 10 all-new plane cards
  • a ready to play 60 card deck (all black bordered)
  • a six sided planar die
  • and a learn to play strategy guide

Deck lists for all of the new Planechase deck packs can be found on Wizard’s product information page for the game, here (opens in a new window).

Additionally, each deck will be composed of 8 cards culminated various sets throughout Magic’s storied history.

Since I work in the industry all of the awesome new Magic the Gathering products end up on my desk, so I take pictures of them. Here are various out of focus pictures for you to hate:

Interview with Aaron Forsythe: The Man Behind M10

August 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Magic 2010 InterviewOver at the popular nerdtastic site called Robot Viking they posted an interview with the leader designer for Magic 2010.  If you want a little more backstory behind the development of the newest and most unique Magic the Gathering set to date take a look at their post titled, Aaron Forsythe Talks About the Awesomeness of Magic 2010.

Here is a snippet from the interview:

RV: Rules changes aside, how is M10 going to change the game, strictly in terms of the cards themselves?

AF: There are a number of powerful cards in the set that will affect all kinds of formats, but I don’t think that’s what you’re asking. I hope that M10 is successful, and that success will lead us to trying more “resonant” card design practices in all sets, not just Core Sets.

RV: This is something that’s been bugging me for years – why haven’t we seen a Magic set based on one of the D&D campaign worlds yet? Is there any chance of this happening?

AF: It gets talked about all the time here, but a product like that wouldn’t bring new people to Wizards’ games; it would just take people that are already playing our stuff and have them spend their money differently. There just isn’t that much upside for us from a business perspective, as cool as it sounds.

Magic 2010

June 18, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Magic 2010Magic 2010 is less than a month away from release now and it is seemingly going to be one of the biggest sets in recent years.

Magic 2010 changes the way Magic The Gathering core sets are scheduled to be released.  Instead of every few years now a new core set will come out every year.  Also, the naming convention has changed from Editions to Years.  For example now instead of 11th edition Magic The Gathering it is going to be Magic The Gathering 2010, 2011, etc.

Additionally, instead of reintegrating Magic The Gathering cards from previous sets throughout the history of M:TG the new core sets will be approx. 50% new cards if the Magic 2010 set is any indicator.

Why the big change? Well according to a post on the official Magic the Gathering website entitled Recapturing the Magic with Magic 2010, Aaron Forsythe says that it is to take M:TG back to it’s roots and make it easier for potential new players to get into the game.

The release date for Magic 2010 is July 17th, 2009. I know avid Magic The Gathering players can’t wait to see the types of cards that Wizards of the Coast has in store for a core set.
